Manchester United have been joined by Real Madrid in the race to sign Leon Goretzka
According to AS (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United are not alone in the hunt to sign Leon Goretzka, with Spanish giants Real Madrid joining the race to sign the German.
Goretzka joined Bayern Munich from Schalke in 2018 and has since gone to win three Bundesliga titles while he also featured in the club’s 2019/20 Champions League victory.
Last season, the German made 32 appearances in all competitions as he scored 8 goals and provided 9 assists from the midfield. However, Goretzka’s current deal with the German club is set to expire in 2022. He is yet to sign a contract extension.
While Goretzka may still sign a contract extension, the delay could have left the door open for other clubs to lure the player away next summer on a free transfer. United are keen on being the frontrunners in that deal, according to AS (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The Red Devils are keen on strengthening their midfield line, given that Paul Pogba is also in the final year of his contract. With uncertainty looming large over the Frenchman’s future, United would be clever if they look for a replacement.
However, Real Madrid are also interested in signing the player on a free next summer, like how they signed Bayern’s David Alaba this summer. Thus, it remains to be seen where Goretzka’s future lies next season.
Manchester United, who have already signed the likes of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane, are gearing up for the new Premier League season, which is set to commence on the 14th of August.
