Transfer News: Bayern Munich confident of keeping Leon Goretzka amidst Manchester United interest
According to Manchester Evening News, German giants Bayern Munich are confident of keeping Leon Goretzka at the club amidst Manchester United interest.
The German international’s deal at Bayern has less than 12 months to run and he is yet to sign an extension. A key part of the German side under Hansi Flick, he appears to have a similar role to play under the new hierarchy. New manager Julien Nagelsmann is however confident that the player will stay put at the Allianz Arena.
“Of course I have talked to him about my plans for him. I’ve told him I’d be happy if he extended and I’m also confident.”
The Red Devils are in a similar boat regarding Paul Pogba but without Nagelsmann’s cautious optimism. The Frenchman is also in the final year of his contract and could be on the move soon. He has shown little inclination to sign a new deal and United will need to replace him if it comes to that.
Bayern are keen to tie him down to a new deal and appear committed to do so. Nagelsmann has already spoken to the player and outlined his plans. It remains to be seen if the player himself is sold on the project.
According to The Daily Mail, Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn has already confirmed that talks with the player over an extension are going well. So far, they are yet to reach an agreement. Goretzka is a world-class midfielder and it comes as no surprise that United continue to monitor his situation.
Nagelsmann believes Goretzka is already one of the best midfielders in the league and can get even better. The German manager does have a bright track record of nurturing talent and developing players. He proved it during his stints at TSG Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig.
Goretzka is in favour of staying in his home country and is looking to build upon his work so far. It could just be a case of both sides reaching a favourable agreement.
