Transfer News: Kieran Trippier could force Atletico Madrid to listen to interest from Manchester United

According to Spanish publication Sport (h/t Manchester Evening News), Kieran Trippier has his heart set on a move to Manchester United this summer.

The English international is an excellent player going forward and will offer United an attacking option at right-back. Aaron Wan-Bissaka is one of the best defensive players in the league but lacks attacking nous to add much to the attack. Signing Trippier will certainly offer Ole Gunnar Solskjaer more options.

Atletico, however, are not biting and are keen to keep the player. The veteran full-back has two years left on his current deal and given his age, it could be a now or never chance to move to Old Trafford.

According to the report, the player is keen on making the move and this could help swing the deal in United’s favour. The 30-year-old’s enthusiasm in making the transfer could finally tip the Spanish giants hand and bring them to the negotiating table.

The chances of them giving us a discount are rather thin and Atletico have leverage given the time left on the player’s contract. United for their part are ready to pay £18million for the former Spurs full-back and it remains to be seen if that will be enough. Given the lack of resale value, it is difficult to see United meet Atletico’s £30m asking price.

Trippier played a key role for Atletico as they won the La Liga title last season. He was eventually named in the La Liga Team of the Year and was also picked for the England squad for the Euros.

The Red Devils have already landed Tom Heaton and Jadon Sancho this summer and are also close to completing a deal for Raphael Varane. The generous outlay on the latter two players could handicap the chances of us upping the bid for Trippier. The ball is now in Atletico’s court and it remains to be seen if they will play ball.

The impact Alex Telles had on Luke Shaw was clear to all last season. The same could be in the offing for Wan-Bissaka if Trippier does arrive at Old Trafford. At the very least, he will add reliable cover to what is an increasingly important position in the modern game.
