Manchester United evaluating possibility of signing Nuno Mendes
According to transfer news from Sport Witness, Manchester United are pondering over the possibility of signing Nuno Mendes. Alex Telles’ injury has put United in the mindset to get a new name in. Mendes is a name United have kept tabs on for a while now.
The 18-year-old is coming off an excellent season that has cemented his reputation as one of the best young talents on the continent. He has made 35 appearances for Sporting this season, scoring once and assisting twice. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Mendes’ performances have also earned him a spot in defending champions Portugal’s squad for this summer’s Euros. However, he failed to get a look in as Raphael Guerreiro started all of their games at left-back. United have been hit with a double whammy at left-back.
Luke Shaw played the last few games of the Euros with broken ribs while Alex Telles sustained an injury in the buildup to the QPR game. That has left Brandon Williams as the only recognised player in the position. That has led United to consider the name of Mendes who has been a target for United for a while now. Although, the defender has a sizable release clause of €70m.

It hardly makes sense to add another expensive name just to cover for players who are likely to return from injury rather soon. As talented as Mendes, it’s not entirely feasible to spend that kind of money in this situation. For now, United might want to use Brandon Williams and hope that either Shaw or Telles returns soon.
