Diego Simeone opens up on speculation over Manchester United target Saul Niguez
According to MEN, Diego Simeone has opened up about the situation regarding Manchester United target Saul Niguez. The Atletico Madrid boss understood that Saul is going through a tough phase but also reminded everyone of how much the player has achieved. However, his words also have a hint that Saul’s time at the club could be nearing an end.
The Spanish midfielder has been linked with a move to United as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to strengthen his midfield. Liverpool are also said to be after his signature. Saul did not start as many games as he used to in the last season which has led to unbridled speculation over his immediate future.
The fact that he started just 22 games last season as compared to the 30+ starts in the three campaigns prior to the last one meant that he missed out on Spain’s Euro 2020 squad. His output in terms of goals and assists had also taken a hit.
Simeone speaks out on Saul’s rough patch
Amidst the interest from United as well as Liverpool, his manager, Diego Simeone had some reassuring words for him. There might also be a slight hint of a possible departure.
“You know better than anyone what Saul has asked and looked for. We have known him for eight years. He has shared a lot of time with us. What empowered him to be what he was is his ability to play in different places, and when his level dropped, the same thing was used against him.
“But this is not the case, this does not go against him. They are [just] moments. After so much time, players need air and after so many years, the last season was more difficult for him.”

Saul’s future is anyone’s to guess at this point. However, with the arrival of Rodrigo De Paul at Atletico Madrid, chances are that his game time is further reduced. United will be hoping that they can push for a sale as Saul can be a handy addition to the side for this season.
