Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to overhaul Manchester United tactics this season
According to ESPN, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is all set to revamp his tactics at Manchester United this season. The Norwegian manager has told the players that he will be switching to a more attacking 4-3-3 formation over the course of this season.
It would be harsh to label Manchester United’s season as a failure last time around but the fact is that they had a shot at so many trophies and missed out on each of them. While the football was not really boring, it left a lot to be desired during the latter stages of the season when United dropped points in the title race, handing the league title to Manchester City.
The most common formation that Solskjaer used over the season was a safe 4-2-3-1. There were not many changes to the setup over the season and one of the most staple midfield combinations was that of Scott McTominay and Fred in a double pivot. It was clear that neither provided any creative influence on the side, leaving Fernandes to do the bulk of it.
The problem was neither midfielder provided what was fully needed – defensive protection. They looked helpless without each other and basically, two players were doing the job of one, leading to them being dubbed as ‘McFred’. However, that will no longer be the case as Solskjaer has his plan (h/t ESPN).
He intends to use a more attack-oriented 4-3-3 where Fernandes will get more help from either Pogba or Van de Beek in midfield. United are hoping that a deal for Raphael Varane will solidify the defence. That will allow the usage of more attack-minded players in midfield.

This season will be Solskjaer’s litmus test. He has come close but those trophies have eluded him. United are a club that thrives on silverware, something that has not been arriving since 2017. Solskjaer will be hoping he is backed further in the transfer market and then mount a title charge.
