Transfer News: Manchester United and Southampton in talks over Brandon Williams

According to transfer news from Hampshire Live, Southampton are in talks with Manchester United over a deal for Brandon Williams. The talks are progressing quietly as claimed by reporter Tom Leach. Norwich were also said to be in the running but now only the Saints are in for him.

The 20-year-old enjoyed a breakout season in 2019/20 due to Luke Shaw’s injuries, However, he has failed to hit the same heights this season. In fact, he made just 19 appearances this season, making a solitary assist. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Capable of playing on either flank, Williams is a two-way player who can bomb up and down the pitch. However, it must be admitted that he does have some development to do before he can make it at United. That can be deemed as one of the reasons why he featured so less over the previous season.

Southampton are in a pickle over their left-back situation. The experienced Ryan Bertrand left the club, meaning that new recruit Romain Perraud is the only recognised left-back in the side. Hence, it is not surprising to see the Saints register an interest in Williams.

Tom Leach of Hampshire Live gave an update on Southampton’s pursuit of Brandon Williams.

“Southampton are unquestionably keen on Brandon Williams and it seems talks are progressing, quietly. Norwich City and Saints were the two clubs who made their interest most clear but the Canaries are now out of the race altogether – leaving Hasenhuttl in pole position. It is unclear exactly how close Saints are but Williams will want regular game time, wherever he ends up.”

With Luke Shaw and Alex Telles locking horns in the left-back position, Williams’ chances of overtaking either of them are minute. Meanwhile, on the other flank, Aaron Wan-Bissaka is the first-choice right-back. A decent player, it wouldn’t hurt United if Williams gets some sort of first-team action at a Premier League side like Southampton.
