Manchester United to battle Tottenham Hotspur and Barcelona for Cristian Romero
According to CalcioMercato (h/t FourFourTwo), Manchester United will face off against Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur for the signature of Cristian Romero.
The 23-year-old is one of the best young talents in the Italian top-flight. The Argentine international has been excellent for Atalanta in a season where they finished third in Serie A. Romero made 42 appearances for the Italians across all competitions, scoring three goals and five assists. A fair contribution for a defender. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Currently, the defender is with the Argentina squad at the Copa America. Links to United have since gone cold. Whether they will resurface post the final on Sunday remains to be seen. Argentina take on defending champions Brazil in the showpiece event.
According to the report, United have failed with a €45m for the centre-back. It is some way shy of the €60m Atalanta hope to bring in. The Red Devils have a good relationship with the Italian side having landed Amad Diallo earlier this year.
Romero is technically a Juventus player on loan at Atalanta. The latter is however expected to make the deal permanent for €16m. Atalanta look set to make a hefty profit once they flip him again this summer.
The 23-year-old played a key role in Atalanta’s top-four finish last season. He won the MVP award for the best defender in Serie A last season. It is fair to say that he is on the right track to glory.
At 23, Romero has the best years ahead of him and will only get better with age. Moreover, he also looks like a cheaper option than the likes of Jules Kounde and Raphael Varane, who are also on the Red Devils’ radar.
