Manchester United starlet Tahith Chong to join Birmingham City on loan
According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United starlet Tahith Chong is set to join Birmingham City on loan this summer.
The 21-year-old was pictured in pre-season training at Carrington earlier this week. However, his future once again appears to lie away from Old Trafford this season.
The Dutchman joined Werder Bremen on a loan last summer. He lasted just half a season, after which he shifted to Brugge until the end of the current campaign. He enjoyed better fortunes in Belgium, scoring once and assisting four more in just 13 appearances. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Chong has garnered interest from a number of clubs both domestically and across the continent. However, he appears to be set to join Birmingham on a season-long loan. With opportunities at a premium at Old Trafford, a move to the lower leagues could prove beneficial.
The Blues finished in the lower half of the second tier last season. Capable of playing on both wings, Chong could prove to be an invaluable asset for them next season. Chong has so far made 16 appearances across all competitions for United. He last played for us in the Europa League against LASK Linz in August 2020.
Chong’s last game for United was as a left-back, the first time he ever played in the position. While the quality of the opposition is suspect, he put in a good account of himself, impressing one and all with his performance. There is clearly a promising player in the Dutchman. Whether he will reach that potential or fall by the wayside remains to be seen.

Chong currently has one year remaining on his contract. United however have the option of a further year. He joined the club from Dutch side Feyenoord in 2016 and won the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award in 2019 and the Denzil Haroun Reserve Player of the Year award in 2019.
It is fair to say that he has failed to live up to his potential at United. Having lost his way somewhat, it remains to be seen if the move to Birmingham can help rekindle the flame.
