Manchester United in the dark over asking price for Raphael Varane
According to Fabrizio Romano (h/t The Express), Manchester United remain unsure of just how much Real Madrid are seeking for ace defender Raphael Varane this summer.
The 28-year-old is in the final year of his deal at Real. With the chances of him walking away on a free next year, the club is keen to cash in this summer. Talks over a new deal for the Frenchman at Real have broken down.
Los Blancos president Florentino Perez is now attempting to sell the defender this summer. Varane now looks set to follow former skipper Sergio Ramos out of the door at the Santiago Bernabeu.
According to the report, United are the clear frontrunners for the World Cup winner. They have been heavily linked with a move since the start of the transfer window.
As Romano revealed, United remain in the dark over what it will take to land the player. While some sources have suggested that the fee will be around £80million, Real could accept a more realistic £38m. (h/t The Express)
United for their part are ready to part with around £50m for the player’s services. It represents a fair value for a player who is set to be a free agent next year. Whether Real will bite the bullet remains to be seen.
Romano goes on to add that Madrid still hold hope that Varane will sign a new deal to stay at the Bernabeu. The player for his part has enjoyed a trophy-laden 10-year spell in the Spanish capital and is keen for a new challenge elsewhere.
Currently, in the prime of his career, he would be a significant addition to any side he joins. United are looking to rebuild a trophy-winning side and could hand Varane the challenge he craves.
