Manchester United appoint Travis Binnion as their new Under-18 coach
According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United have appointed Travis Binnion as the new coach of their Under-18 side.
He will replace Neil Ryan who has been promoted to assist Neil Wood at the Under-23 level. The trio will work in conjunction to bring through the promising players currently in the club’s academy. United have seen a number of young players make their debuts for the senior side under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Binnion originally arrived from Sheffield United in 2019 and worked with the Under-16 side. He had previously overseen the development of Harry Maguire and Dominic Calvert-Lewin at Bramall Lane before he was brought to United by the academy head Nick Cox.
Ryan replaced Kieran McKenna as the U18 coach three years ago but has moved up to the U23s for the new season. The U23 squad is expected to be younger than last season as a number of players could be allowed to leave on loan.
The Under-18s finished second to Manchester City by a point in the Premier League North last season and were eliminated from the FA Youth Cup early on. Hopefully, they will put up a better showing this time around.
United have already responded to Nicky Butt’s departure as head of first-team development. Justin Cochrane, who joined the club last month is his replacement.
The highly-rated coach joined from the FA, where he served as the Youth Development Phase Lead as well as England Under-17s head coach. He will now oversee the development of Manchester United’s Professional Development Phase players (U17-U23).

United are keen for more ‘flexibility’ between the U23s and U18s, with Ryan acting as a link between the two squads. Former player, Quinton Fortune, who earlier assisted Wood, left to join Reading’s first-team coaching staff last year.
