Man United’s brilliant financial plan to pay £73m to Dortmund for Jadon Sancho

Manchester United will not be paying Jadon Sancho transfer fee up front

According to The Athletic (h/t The Daily Star), Manchester United have worked out an excellent pay structure for the deal that sees Jadon Sancho arrive at Old Trafford this summer.

United’s two-year-long pursuit of Sancho came to a fruitful conclusion after an agreement was reached with Borussia Dortmund this week. The Red Devils will pay the Germans £73million fee to secure the 21-year-old English international’s services.

A sizeable amount that makes him one of our our costliest purchases ever, United have shown their business acumen by avoiding a situation where they will need to fork out the money upfront. Instead, the club will pay it in instalments over five years.

The structure put in place will have a far greater impact on our dealings going forward. United haven’t just saved themselves £30million from Dortmund’s initial asking price but also made sure they now have funds to make other moves.

According to the report, this leaves more room in the FFP budget should United want to make more moves in the window. Given that we do need further reinforcements, this is good news for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has been often criticised for his transfer dealings in the past. It is fair to say that he has pulled off a blinder here. This could very well be his last significant contribution before he leaves the club in the winter.

Credit where it is due

Sancho also arrives at United as one of the club’s best-paid players. The 21-year-old’s £350,000-a-week salary puts him only behind David de Gea in the club’s wage the bill. The likes of Marcus Rashford, Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes are all left behind in his wake. (h/t The Sun)

The English ace is currently with the Three Lions squad at the Euros. While he may have had a frustrating tournament so far, there is hope that he could play a bigger role in the games to come.

Securing Sancho is just one of the reinforcements United need to challenge for the Premier League title. Who will now follow him through the doors at Old Trafford remains to be seen.
