Manchester United starlet Mark Helm joins Burnley
According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United Academy star Mark Helm has signed a two-year deal with Premier League side Burnley.
The 19-year-old had been at United since the age of 7, coming up through the different age groups. His 12-year association with the Red Devils came to an end after he failed to agree on fresh terms regarding a new deal.
Helm has been fantastic for the United U-23s and has even been dubbed as ‘the next Wayne Rooney’. He has also developed quite a reputation as a free-kick specialist.
“He’s [McNeil] a role model, if you like.”
Speaking to Burnley’s official site (h/t Manchester United News), Helm admitted that former United star Dwight McNeil was the inspiration behind his move to Turf Moor. A major reason for his move is the hope of securing more first-team opportunities. It is fair to say that it would have been harder to come by at Old Trafford.
“He shows that the pathway there is possible and hopefully I can do the same as him.”
McNeil too was released from the United academy at the age of 14 before joining the Clarets in 2014. It was at Turf Moor that he made his name as a top-flight star. The playmaker has already made 96 Premier League appearances for Sean Dyche’s side despite being just 21 years old.
A fresh beginning
Helm admits that he enjoyed his time at United. However, it was a time for a change and he hopes Burnley can give him the stage to impress. He will be starting next season with the Under-23s and will hope to make the cut to the next level.
“Burnley is a Premier League club and hopefully I can make my mark here in the seasons to come. It’s a chance to show what you’re made of and I’m really looking forward to it.”
While he may not have been the best youngster in our ranks, he is quite talented. After all, how many 19-year-olds get compared to a legend such as Rooney. We wish Helm all the best in his future endeavours.
