Fabrizio Romano: Manchester United set to prioritize a new deal for Bruno Fernandes
According to the reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Manchester United will now turn their attention to secure a new deal for Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes.
The Red Devils made their first big signing of the summer after landing Jadon Sancho. While the deal is yet to be finalized, it is all but done with just the fine print remaining. With the 21-year-old in the bag, United are now set to address the superstar already in their ranks.
Fernandes has been a revelation since he joined United last year. Arguably our best player since, his goals and assists have gotten us out of a sticky spot numerous times. With 40 goals and 25 assists in 80 games so far, the numbers speak for themselves. (h/t Transfermarkt)
As things stand, despite his contributions, Fernandes is only the eighth best-paid player in the United squad. The likes of Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire and David de Gea are all ahead of him.
Newboy Sancho also arrives at United to a lucrative payday. The 21-year-old’s £350,000-a-week wage packet makes a mockery of the £180,000-a-week that Fernandes earns at the moment. Given the impact he has had, the latter is surely in for a pay rise. (h/t The Sun)
United are aware that they cannot allow the situation to fester and are in talks with Fernandes about agreeing on better terms. Talks are currently ongoing and updates can be expected this month.
Fernandes signed a five-and-a-half-year deal with the club in January 2020 with the option of a one-year extension. While his future is secure, it would be unfair of us not to elevate his position in the wage bracket.
