Manchester United to offer Jesse Lingard a three-year contract extension worth £130,000-a-week
According to The Daily Star, Manchester United are ready to offer Jesse Lingard a three-year contract extension this summer.
The academy graduate spent the second half of last season on loan at Premier League side, West Ham United. He played a major role in the Hammers’ surge to qualify for Europe. Lingard made 16 appearances for the Londoners, scoring nine goals and assisting five. (h/t Transfermarkt)
David Moyes is impressed with the midfielder and is keen to sign the player permanently. With just a year to go on his current deal at United, the club has a decision to make this summer.
West Ham, despite their intentions, are struggling to meet United’s £25million asking price for Lingard, not to mention the player’s £110,000-a-week wages. The Red Devils have now thrown another spanner in the works by offering Lingard a new contract worth £130,000-a-week for the next three seasons. (h/t The Daily Star)
According to the report, United will also have the option to trigger another year on the England international’s deal. The clause has come to become a mainstay in most of the contract offers that we have made in recent seasons.
While United may be keen to keep Lingard, it is debatable as to how much game time he will receive at Old Trafford. After all, he was a player on the fringes before going on to rebuild his reputation at West Ham earlier this year.
The potential arrival of Jadon Sancho will add another layer of barrier in keeping Lingard from United’s starting lineup. At 28, he is in the prime of his career and has seen his stock rise this year. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has shown little to suggest that he can get the best out of the player and Lingard would be better served seeking his fortunes elsewhere.

Despite his good form, Lingard failed to make the final cut for Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the Euros. Another season on the fringes at United is unlikely to do him any favours. A move elsewhere where he can impress in the 2021/22 season could give him a fighting chance to make the World Cup squad next summer.
