Juventus and Celta Vigo enter the fray for Manchester United outcast Sergio Romero
According to The Athletic (h/t The Sun), Manchester United star Sergio Romero is attracting considerable attention from across Europe as his stay at Old Trafford draws to a close.
The Argentine joined the club in 2015 and served as a dependable understudy to David de Gea at United. He has let in only 27 goals in 61 games for United, keeping an impressive 37 clean sheets. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Romero played a major role in our 2016/17 Europa League campaign where we emerged victoriously. His efforts in the 2019/20 campaign were shut down by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who benched the veteran for De Gea in the latter stages of the competition. He has not played for the club since.
Juventus are keen to bring in a new backup defender this summer to replace the legendary Gianluigi Buffon. They are also keeping tabs on Keylor Navas. Since they already have Wojciech Szczesny in goal, bringing in a dependable backup like Romero, especially for free, would be a major draw. (h/t The Sun)
One last hurrah?
Spanish side Celta Vigo are also in the fray for the player. Despite Juventus placing Romero high on the wanted list, he could technically have a better chance of playing regularly in Spain. It makes little sense for him to swap a place on the bench at United for one in Turin.
The 34-year-old was left out of the Argentina squad for this summer’s Copa America. With the World Cup in a year’s time, he will be better served to choose regular game time over potentially a better payday.
Romero has already been approached by Everton who were keen on him last summer. The Toffees already have English international Jordan Pickford in their ranks. It remains to be seen if the United star is willing to stay in England and switch to Goodison Park.
