Wolves to battle Manchester United for West Bromwich Albion star Sam Johnstone
According to The Athletic (Subscription Required), Wolverhampton Wanderers have entered the fray for Manchester United target Sam Johnstone.
Johnstone was one of the better performers in what was a poor season for West Brom. The Baggies were relegated just a year after they came up to the top flight. The 28-year-old’s performances have garnered interest from West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur.
The 28-year-old has just over a year left on his current deal. Given his current stock, the Baggies are seeking £20m for his services.
Wolves could be set to lose Rui Patricio to AS Roma this summer. They will then need to bring in a new goalkeeper and Johnstone could just be the man. The Englishman isn’t just homegrown but has also proven himself capable of holding his own in the top-flight.
Wolves could land around £13m for Patricio and that could ease their attempts to bring in Johnstone.
The Englishman came through the ranks at United but failed to make it to the first-team. He left United to join the Baggies permanently in 2018 and has since gone from strength to strength.
It is debatable if United will make a move for Johnstone given the strength we have in this department. However, that could change if either Dean Henderson or David de Gea leaves the club this summer.

United have a sell-on clause of around 15% inserted into Johnstone’s contract with West Brom. This could help drive down the asking price if we do choose to make a move. At the very least, we will be in line for a financial windfall if another deal for him goes through.
