Manchester United preparing an offer for Villarreal star Pau Torres
According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are experiencing progress in their efforts to land Villarreal star Pau Torres.
The 24-year-old is coming off an excellent season that ended with him helping the Yellow Submarines beat us in the Europa League final. Now with the Spanish squad for the Euros, Torres has seen his reputation soar in recent months.
United are in the market for a new defender and are still keeping tabs on Torres. There appears to be increasing confidence in the club hierarchy that a deal can be struck for him this summer. It will, however, have to wait until after the Euros.
According to the report, United viewed the Europa League final last month as Torres’ last ‘audition’ as a potential signing. It is fair to say that he passed it with flying colours. He is now one of the five players on United’s shortlist. (h/t MEN)
Another point in Torres’s favour is that he is left-footed. The trait should make him an ideal partner for skipper Harry Maguire in the heart of the Red Devils defence. The Spaniard ticks a number of boxes and it remains to be seen if we can land him.
Torres has a release clause in his current deal that amounts to around €60m. His contract at Villarreal runs until 2024. This does hand the Spaniards enough leeway in negotiations.
The report goes on to add that there is some belief Villarreal could yet consider a player-plus-cash offer for Torres if any suitors are unable to match such a figure in the current financial climate. Whether this is something that United can take advantage of remains to be seen.

Torres is not the only defender United are in talks for. The Red Devils had a £50m package to sign Varane rebuffed by Real Madrid but continue to remain in dialogue with the Spanish club. Whether they will turn away and focus all their attentions on Torres remains to be seen.
