Liverpool to battle Manchester United for Aston Villa star John McGinn
According to the Sunday Post (h/t Not the Old Firm), Liverpool are set to challenge Manchester United for the signing of Aston Villa star John McGinn.
The 26-year-old has been an excellent player for the Villans and made 37 Premier League appearances, scoring thrice and assisting six more last season. He was one of their key performers and played a big role in their 11th-place finish in the Premier League.
He has carried that fine form into the Euros and has been one of Scotland’s best players during the tournament. McGinn was particularly impressive in their 0-0 draw over England on Friday.
The performance was not lost on Liverpool who are now in the fray for the midfielder. A central midfielder who can also play on the left, the player’s versatility is an added bonus.
Jurgen Klopp’s side is in the market for a new midfielder following Georginio Wijnaldum’s exit. The veteran Dutchman ended his five-year association with the Reds, leaving on a free before joining Paris Saint-Germain.
Bringing in a midfielder is something United will need to do if they are forced to part with Paul Pogba. The Frenchman could be in the market next year, forcing us to cash in on him this summer. If that is the case, we cannot afford to go into the new campaign without proper reinforcements.
To be fair, McGinn is not the most exciting player we have been linked with. However, he could prove to be an effective addition. According to The Athletic (Subscription Required), United’s technical director Darren Fletcher is a huge fan of the Villa star and is keen to bring him to Old Trafford.

The midfielder is valued at an impressive £50million and it remains to be seen if United or Liverpool are willing to make the offer to land him. Given the price, there are better options available elsewhere.
