Jude Bellingham takes a subtle swipe at Manchester United one year after rejecting them
According to The Mirror, English wonderkid Jude Bellingham has opened up on snubbing Manchester United in favour of Borussia Dortmund last summer.
The Red Devils were very keen on landing the 17-year-old who was then at Birmingham City. The club was so serious about landing him that they had legendary former manager Sir Alex Ferguson give the player and his family a tour of the club’s Carrington training base.
Bellingham was impressed with the facilities but not enough to commit himself to join us. He has since established himself as a first-teamer at Dortmund, making 46 appearances in his first season.
“To be fair, it was a decision that was quite easy in the end.”
Speaking on his decision, Bellingham admits the move to Dortmund was easy to pick. Rather than anything United lack, it appears to be the German side’s track record with young talents that appears to have made up his mind.
“I think if you look at Dortmund’s track record with young players and the way they develop them, it was the obvious answer.”
Bellingham goes on to add that his decision was endorsed by his parents, who had his back. The youngster is comfortable with his decision and does not appear to harbour any regrets over it.
“In terms of the decision I made, I had all their support throughout the whole way so I was quite comfortable in making it.”
A promising summer
Bellingham’s performances even saw him get selected in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the Euros. While it is debatable if he will feature, the experience will aid his development.
The Bundesliga has emerged as a trial ground for young English talent to make their name in recent seasons. Whether Bellingham eventually follows in the footsteps of Jadon Sancho remains to be seen.
