Transfer News: Alaves keen to keep Manchester United loanee Facundo Pellistri for the 2021/22 season

According to journalist Jonathan Shragar via Inside Futbol, Deportivo Alaves are keen to keep hold of Manchester United loanee Facundo Pellistri for another season.

The young Uruguayan arrived at Old Trafford on deadline day last summer. He impressed for the reserves before being permitted to leave the club on loan in January.

He got his first taste of European football in Spain and appears to have made a positive impression. While he failed to make a single goal contribution in 12 appearances, Pellistri played his role in helping Alaves avoid relegation.

Now with their top-flight status secured, the Spaniards have made an official request to keep hold of the 19-year-old for the 2021/22 campaign.

According to Shrager, other Spanish clubs are also in the fray for the youngster. Pellistri for his part looks set to discuss what the future holds for him at United.

While it is possible that Pellistri may make his first-team bow if he stays on at United, it would be far fetched to assume he will be a regular. The same cannot be said of at Alaves where he will get ample opportunities to play in games.

United are keen to bring in a right-winger this summer. Jadon Sancho is the favourite to fill the position and can be expected to be an automatic starter when available.

With the likes of Daniel James, Mason Greenwood and even Amad Diallo available, Pellistri would be hard-pressed for opportunities. Choosing to stay put at Alaves and develop his game could be the best way forward for all parties.

According to ESPN South America (h/t Manchester Evening News), Pellistri admitted that he regrets not spending enough time at United before going out on loan. While it is understandable, he will do himself no harm if he continues to develop himself away from the spotlight.
