Roy Keane slams Fred and Scott McTominay after Manchester United are humbled by Liverpool
It would be an understatement to claim that Manchester United legend Roy Keane is not a fan of Fred and Scott McTominay.
It was clear to see why as both players looked out of sorts in a humiliating 2-4 loss to Liverpool at home. The fact that they could not dominate a Merseyside midfield lacking Jordan Henderson is worrying.
According to The Metro, Keane has now gone on to claim that United will struggle to win trophies unless they upgrade on their midfield duo.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has preferred to use the United duo in the biggest games this season. While they have had their moments, it is not without setbacks either.
Keane believes United will be hard-pressed to win trophies as long as the duo continues to start. If yesterday’s performance is anything to go by, he might be right.
“As long as those two players are playing in midfield for Manchester United, they will not be winning any big trophies.”
A clear lack of quality
Keane believes the performance on the night showcased the lack of quality United possessed. Liverpool were comfortably better off and could have been out of sight if not for some poor finishing.
“Tonight there wasn’t enough quality. But the other worry is Liverpool could have scored six or seven.”
Fred and McTominay have built up a good understanding and are decent players. However, they do have their shortcomings and fall short of being classified as top tier.
While they are good players to have, the jury is out on whether United can compete with the best using the duo as first choice midfielders.

United have now suffered two home losses on the spin. Having also lost Harry Maguire to injury, we cannot afford to lose any more momentum.
While the Premier League season is well and truly over, we still have the Europa League final to play. Anything short of a win will undo all the promise that we have shown over the course of the campaign.
