Glazers unlikely to relinquish control of Manchester United despite backlash
According to ESPN (h/t The Express), Manchester United owners, the Glazers are unlikely to relinquish control of the club despite recent backlash from fans.
The Americans have been in control of the club since 2005. However, they have never retained the trust of the fanbase and have largely been seen as greedy.
With the club’s commitment to the European Super League, a barrier appears to have been crossed. Fan protests have become the norm since and reached a crescendo last night when fans broke into Old Trafford.
While yesterday’s planned protests were largely peaceful, some fans did go overboard. Flares were thrown at the Sky Sports box while a policeman was also injured in the process.
Scenes from yesterday’s protests have gone viral. While some have backed the protestors, others have spoken against it. It has however done little to deter the Glazers’ interest in maintaining ownership.
Not only are the Americans aware of United’s monetary value but are also taken in by the status of owning such an esteemed institution.
It was reported earlier that the Red Devils could be sold for around £4billion. It would represent a healthy profit for the Americans, who paid just £500m to gain control of the club in 2005.
This revelation comes as a blow for fans who have been keen to see the Glazers leave. Whether this will result in a further escalation in the coming weeks remains to be seen.
