Dayot Upamecano reveals why he rejected a move to Manchester United
According to The Mirror, Dayot Upamecano has revealed why he turned down the chance to move to Manchester United in the summer.
The Frenchman is one of the best young defenders in European football and has been a rock at the back for RB Leipzig this season. He has since agreed on a deal to join Bayern Munich once the season comes to an end in the summer.
United are keen to bring in a centre-back and Upamecano would have been an excellent addition. However, we have missed the bus and he will now ply his trade elsewhere.
“I like it here, the level of the games, the fans, the stadiums.”
The 22-year-old’s decision to join Bayern was influenced by his desire to stay put in the Bundesliga. He admits that he had no inclination to leave Germany after Bayern came calling.
“I was sure relatively quickly that I wanted to stay in Germany and in the Bundesliga.”
He goes on to add that Bayern is the epitome of success in Germany and that he cannot play for a bigger team in the country. There are few who can argue with that assessment.
A missed opportunity!
Upamecano will be joined by his Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann who will take over from Hansi Flick in the summer. It is fair to say that it should make his integration into the Bayern side easier.
It is unfortunate that we missed out on Upamecano. A player with a number of traits in his arsenal, he could have been a gamechanger for us at the back.

Interestingly, United could have signed Upamecano for cheap six years ago. Then just 16, Upamecano was keen to seal the transfer to one of the biggest clubs in world football. But United were willing to pay just £500,000 for his services instead of the £700,000 demanded by Valenciennes. (h/t The Sun)
