Confusion reigns over Manchester United being docked points for Old Trafford protest
According to Manchester Evening News, the Premier League and the FA are at odds with each other regarding a point deduction for Manchester United.
This comes after supporters invaded the Old Trafford turf ahead of our clash against Liverpool. This led to the match being postponed and will now be played on a later date.
The Premier League have since launched an investigation into the incident and are looking into how over 200 supporters got into the stadium.
According to section 8.3.4 of the FA rulebook, United could be found responsible for the match not going ahead. In the scenario that the club’s security measures are found not to have been adequate, Liverpool will be awarded the three points.
“In the event of a match being abandoned due to the conduct of one Club or its members or supporters the Board has the power to order that the match is not replayed and to award either one or three points to the Club not at fault.”
While a point deduction is part of the agenda, United cannot be charged with a fine. However, there is a way for the club to escape a point deduction.
Given the police influence over the decision to postpone the game, Premier League law states that the Red Devils could not be held accountable. Since both clubs were privy to the decision, there is every chance that United may escape any sanctions, at least regarding the points.
The Red Devils are currently in the second spot in the Premier League while Liverpool still retain hopes of a top-four finish.
