Anton Ferdinand: Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand can strike it big as a director of football
According to Manchester Evening News, Anton Ferdinand believes his brother, Manchester United legend, Rio Ferdinand has the required qualities to strike it big as a director of football.
The former English international was one of the finest defenders to play in the Premier League. He formed a strong partnership at the back with Nemanja Vidic as United went on to experience both domestic and continental glory.
Since his retirement from the game in 2015, Ferdinand has been busy in a number of ventures off the field. Not only does he have his own clothing brand called Five Supply, but he is a pundit on BT Sport. He also hosts a popular Youtube show, Rio Ferdinand presents FIVE.
Winner of six Premier League titles and the 2008 Champions League, Ferdinand is yet to follow a number of his compatriots who have ventured into coaching.
“The way that he is as a person, I don’t think he’ll go into management now. I know he’d want to go in and be the best, and he understands that because he’s only ever learned from the best in Sir Alex Ferguson.”
While Anton does believe his brother will return to the sidelines, he reckons that Ferdinand’s true calling is in the backroom.
“I could see him potentially becoming a director of football somewhere. He’s definitely got the skill-set and the know-how to do that sort of job.”
Destiny beckons?
A number of Ferdinand’s former United teammates have taken up big behind-the-scenes positions at top clubs. Edwin van der Sar is the CEO at Ajax Amsterdam while Darren Fletcher was recently appointed the technical director at United.
Anton believes his brother has the skill set to succeed and it remains to be seen if that is truly the case. A football man through and through, there is little doubt about the Englishman’s love for the game.
