Transfer News: Manchester United will have to pay £10m to re-sign Sam Johnstone

According to transfer news from The Sun, Manchester United will have to pay £10m if they are to re-sign Sam Johnstone. That is the demand from West Brom in order for them to sell the player. Tottenham are also said to be after the keeper.

United have an interesting goalkeeper situation on their hands. Dean Henderson, after waiting in the wings, has usurped David De Gea’s number one spot.

For three years, De Gea has been making errors sporadically and the arrival of Henderson meant that he was given a chance to stake his claim and make the spot his own. With De Gea unofficially the second choice now, he is likely to leave. If he is restored to his usual role, Henderson would demand the same.

This means that Man United would require a decent second-choice keeper. The former Manchester United academy graduate has been a sole bright spot in a season that seems set to end in relegation for the Baggies. They are very likely to go down barring a miracle of sorts. However, the 28-year-old English keeper is keen on staying in the top-flight.

With relegation all but certain for West Brom, the club could be hit further financially and might have to let go of some of their biggest assets. Johnstone is valued at a healthy £10million, which seems about right for a keeper of his potential.

United sold him for half that price to the Baggies and will have to pay double of that to re-sign him. While that’s not too expensive a fee, the real issue would be whether Johnstone would return to the club and be content with a place on the bench.
