Manchester United and Liverpool in talks over pre-season friendly series
According to the Daily Star, Manchester United are in talks with arch-rivals Liverpool over the possibility of playing a friendly season as part of the pre-season this summer.
Pre-season tours for United or Liverpool usually feature lucrative trips to either the United States of America or the Far East. But given the travel restrictions in place due to the pandemic, such a scenario is unlikely to happen this time out.
As a result, the two clubs are considering squaring off against one another in pre-season friendlies during the off-season.
Such an arrangement would see Manchester United host Liverpool at Old Trafford in late July before we travel to Anfield to take on the Reds in August, just before the 2021/22 season kicks off.
The two games could also serve as trial events for fans to return to stadiums in full capacity at the onset of the new season, should the UK Government continue to relax the restrictions.
Last year saw us have little time for a pre-season given as we went deep in the FA Cup and UEFA Europa League competitions, which meant a delayed finish to our 2019/20 campaign.
In the end, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer & co. ended up playing just one pre-season friendly against Aston Villa, which ended in a 1-0 defeat, courtesy of an Ollie Watkins strike.

A good pre-season is an important part of the preparation for any team. But with the European Championships set to go ahead this summer and the pandemic situation, it remains to be seen as to what plans the club comes up with.
