The Glazers were desperate for Ed Woodward to stay at Manchester United
According to the Mirror, Manchester United owners, The Glazers, were desperate to try and convince Ed Woodward to stay at the club after his resignation.
Woodward decided to tender his resignation from the role of the executive vice-chairman of Manchester United on Tuesday night following the unraveling of the European Super League.
Woodward was said to have played a critical role in the development of the breakaway league that was headed by the likes of Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli.
However, as clubs one by one began to withdraw from the proposal amid fan backlash, Woodward decided to call time on his career at Manchester United.
As per the report, the former accountant and investment banker, who had been with the club since 2005, has confided to close ones that supporting the European Super League was one of the biggest mistakes of his professional career.
It is also said that he felt great remorse over the entire development which is why he decided to resign. However, Manchester United owner Joel Glazer was desperate for Woodward to continue at the club.
It is no secret that the Glazers and Woodward have a strong relationship, with the latter having played a major role in their takeover of the club back in 2005. And Joel Glazer made one last desperate plea to stop Woodward from leaving, but to no avail.
