Speaking to Reuters (h/t The Metro), Sir Alex Ferguson has opened up on what he really thinks about Manchester United taking part in the proposed European Super League (ESL).

The Premier League’s big six are among the 12 clubs who have committed to the financially lucrative new competition that secures the future of those teams involved.

One of the greatest managers in the game, Ferguson is responsible for taking United to the top of both English and European football. He, more than anyone else, has a right to comment on the future of the institution he helped build.

Ferguson believes the Super League will end European football as we know it. It will be the beginning of a new era for the sport in the competition.

“Talk of a Super League is a move away from 70 years of European club football.”

The existing football structure gives any club the opportunity to rise to the top of the pyramid. The Super League effectively shuts the door on it, ensuring that power is concentrated in the hands of a select few.

“Both as a player for a provincial team Dunfermline in the 60s and as a manager at Aberdeen winning the European Cup Winners’ Cup, for a small provincial club in Scotland it was like climbing Mount Everest.”

No role!

Ferguson reiterated that getting into the Champions League remains the dream for many clubs. He himself experienced some of his best nights as the United boss in the prestigious competition.

The Scot also denied having played any role in United’s decision to be a part of the ESL.

“I’m not sure [if] Manchester United are involved in this, as I am not part of the decision making process.”

The proposal for the ESL has drawn flak from various quarters. Whether this is the real thing or a ploy to negotiate better terms in the restructured UEFA Champions League remains to be seen.
