Paul Scholes feels Manchester United should sign a centre-back to help Pogba and Fernandes

According to news from Metro, Paul Scholes feels that Manchester United should sign a centre-back to aid Pogba and Fernandes. The United icon is of the opinion that a new and dominant centre-back will not only improve the defence but will allow Pogba and Fernandes to play with their full potential.

Manchester United have been after a new centre-back for a while now, with pundits and fans all demanding the same.

The effect of Harry Maguire was there to be seen as United have looked a much more resolute defensive unit with the England defender at the back.

However, the same cannot be said of his partners. Lindelof is a decent defender but is often overpowered by the more physical forwards in the league.

Eric Bailly could have been the perfect solution if not for his repeated bouts with injury. Lastly, there is Tuanzebe who is yet to convince that he deserves a starting role.

Scholes felt that if the side added another world-class defender, it would not only amp up the defence but also maximise the attacking potential of Pogba and Fernandes. Often, we have seen that United play two defensive midfielders such as Fred, Mctominay and Matic.

The former United midfielder thinks that adding another defender would allow Solskjaer to play just one defensive midfielder, thereby freeing the duo of Pogba and Fernandes of any defensive work and instead focussing on the attack.

‘We did speak before the game about possibly bringing a centre-back in who’s more dominant than what they have now. I think that will allow them to play just the one holding midfield player.

‘Okay, you might not play that all the time, when you’re playing Manchester City, for example, but I think Man United need that attacking, flowing play and I think Pogba in the centre of the pitch will bring that alongside Bruno Fernandes.”

It does make sense with Scholes’ perspective. Too often we have seen the likes of Pogba and Fernandes deep in the United half, tracking back to help out the defence. The addition of a better and more dominant defender should address the issue.
