According to the Metro, Manchester United loanee, Teden Mengi has left a solid impression on Derby County boss Wayne Rooney.

The 18-year-old joined the Rams on a loan in January and has since made seven appearances for the Championship side. One of United’s best young talents, Mengi has found first-team appearances easier to come by at Pride Park.

Rooney is keen to keep the player on for another season. He has now confirmed that Derby do have the option to do just that.

“Teden will play more games for us, he is a player I am hoping to keep here for next season.”

Rooney confirmed that he has already spoken to United regarding Mengi. The decision on whether to stay on at Pride Park or not now lies with the player.

“Yes. It is on the player, really”

The Derby boss believes Mendi has improved as a player. Now that he has had a taste of first-team action, it remains to be seen if he will be happy to return to United.

“I feel he has improved a lot and he has shown he can play at this level. Whether he is happy to go back and sit on the bench and play Carabao Cup games or whether he wants to further his experience and play in a very tough league, it is down to Teden.”

A win-win?

Despite the Red Devils problems at the back, Mengi is not the solution. He still has much to do before he establishes himself as a regular in the first-team at Old Trafford.

While he may get minutes in cup competitions, it will do precious little to aid his progress. Everyone will be better served if the player chooses to stay on at Derby for another season.
