Club News: Manchester United launch anti-discrimination campaign to combat online abuse
According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United have flagged off a new initiative to combat online racial abuse directed at players in recent months.
The ‘SEE RED’ campaign encourages supporters to take responsibility for reporting incidents of racism or other hate crimes. The club has set up a reporting tool on the website to facilitate it.
The unwarranted incidents came to light in the past few months after a slew of United players were abused on the basis of their colour. The likes of Axel Tuanzebe, Fred, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba were all subject to the abuse.
To get the point across, United released a powerful video that highlights how players from different ethnicities have contributed to the club’s history and success.
It includes Andy Cole’s title-clincher against Tottenham Hotspur in 1999, Rio Ferdinand’s last-minute winner against Liverpool in 2006, Dwight Yorke’s hat-tricks against Leicester, Derby and Arsenal, as well as Yorke and Cole’s link-up in the legendary 3-3 draw with Barcelona in the Camp Nou in 1998.
Fans of today too do not have to look far to see heroes come in all colours. The likes of Marcus Rashford stand out as examples to be followed both on and off the field.
A matter of pride!
United managing director Richard Arnold revealed that the club is proud of the diverse set of players who have all represented the club with honour over the years.
This isn’t just a one club problem and is largely an issue that plagues society as a whole. Arnold has not just challenged the Reds but also other clubs to do what is needed to put an end to this menace.

While the club is doing its part, the onus is now on the supporters to ensure those who do not enshrine the values of equality get called out for their views. Only by working together can we bring about a better tomorrow.
