Manchester United might offer Jesse Lingard a second chance with new contract
A report by The Sun (h/t Daily Mail) states that Manchester United could be tempted to offer Jesse Lingard a new contract and get him back in the first-team picture.
The English midfielder was loaned out to West Ham United in the January transfer window. Earlier, he was frozen out by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, where he made no Premier League or Champions League appearances.
Moreover, he was just named in four matchday squads this season by the Norwegian. But his spell at the London Stadium is the perfect example as to why teams want to loan out players.
Lingard has played 7 games for the Hammers and already has 5 goals and 3 assists to his name. And this good form could turn his fortunes around at Old Trafford as they might look to pen him down to a new deal.
A second lease at life
His current United deal expires in the summer of 2022 but a new 3-year contract would give the 28-year-old enough time to impress Solskjaer once again and would also increase his transfer valuation.
The report also makes note of West Ham’s desire to make Lingard’s stay in London permanent. They are currently sitting in 5th place, just 2 points behind Chelsea who are in 4th.
Lingard’s good form has even seen him get called up to the England national team for the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. He got an assist and played the full 90 minutes in the Three Lions’ 5-0 win against San Marino.
