Danny Murphy reckons Manchester United will sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
According to Danny Murphy (h/t Daily Mail), Manchester United could part ways with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer if he fails to win the Europa League this season. The Red Devils were recently dumped out of the FA Cup, thereby losing their shot at potential silverware.
It has been a mixed season for Solskjaer and Manchester United as they still keep searching for their first trophy since 2017. They showed good form during the festive months of December and January to claim first place in the league only to falter in the following month to give Manchester City the advantage.
Their exit at the hands of City in the Carabao Cup and Leicester in the FA Cup means that the only remaining competition is the Europa League which is a realistic chance of silverware.
The league is pretty much decided, with City holding a 14-point lead having played a game more. Barring an extraordinary collapse, the title will be City’s.
United have performed decently since they were ejected to the Europa League and dealt well with Sociedad and Milan. They are scheduled to face Granada in the quarter-finals next month.
However, Murphy believes the club could look for a change if the Europa League is not won at the end of this season.
He’s in a position for me where the Europa League, for me, has become monumental for him and the club. I like him and I’m not one who wants to see managers sacked and I do think they’ve made some strides forward, but Manchester United have to be doing better.
If they don’t win the Europa League and only finish in the top four then I think they’ll make a change.’

While Solskjaer has made progress and downplayed the importance of cup competitions, the fact that United are trophyless for four seasons now makes for grim reading.
The club’s ethos is built on regular trophies and the higher-ups may soon have to decide on what to do if the four-year wait is extended.
