Transfer News: Manchester United consider parting ways with Anthony Martial
Speaking on The TouchlineTalk on Youtube, journalist Dean Jones has some news on the future of Manchester United star Anthony Martial.
The Frenchman ended last season as the club’s top scorer. There was much promise going into the current campaign but he has so far failed to fulfil them.
He has so far made 35 appearances this season, scoring 7 goals and 8 assists. It is far from the prolific rate that is expected of an elite club’s top striker. (h/t Transfermarkt)
The 25-year-old was signed from AS Monaco in 2015 and immediately impressed under Louis van Gaal. He failed to gain the favour of Jose Mourinho and has been patchy under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Six years on, he has failed to reach the levels expected of him. The club too appear to be running out of patience and could part ways if a good offer comes in.
“I think that they’re definitely considering selling him if a good offer was to come in.”
Not the go-to man
Jones also went on to add that Martial’s inability to convert big chances and the lack of clinical edge has cost United dear. His ability to finish off opportunities is far from the assassin’s cold touch that the likes of Erling Haaland and Harry Kane possess.
“I don’t think Anthony Martial is that person, even when he does have good games, he still misses big chances, hasn’t become the clinical number nine that you thought you were going to be getting there.”
There is still some way to go before the season ends and Martial could yet be a difference-maker for the club. With key fixtures in the Europa League and FA Cup to potentially come, the Frenchman could step up his game and prove he is the man.
If his history is considered, he will have quite the gap to bridge to achieve that.

Martial has made 257 appearances for United, scoring 78 goals and assisting 49. While the tally is not really poor, it is unbecoming of the world-class striker that United need. (h/t Transfermarkt)
A change could be on the cards this season. Whether the Frenchman will be kept on as a backup remains to be seen.
