Transfer News: Manchester United target Matthew Hoppe could leave Schalke in the summer
According to a transfer news report by Transfermarkt, Manchester United target Matthew Hoppe could be on his way out of Schalke this summer.
The 20-year-old has a gentleman’s agreement with the Bundesliga side to be allowed to leave provided the right offer comes in. The youngster has garnered much attention and the Red Devils are but one of the teams keeping a tab on his situation.
The well-travelled forward began his footballing journey at MLS side LA Galaxy. He then enjoyed spells at Strikers FC and Barca Residency academy before ending up at Schalke in 2019.
Hoppe made his first-team bow for the Germans last November. However, it was in January against Hoffenheim that he truly burst onto the scene.
He scored a hat-trick on the night as Schalke snapped their 30 games winless streak. By doing so, he followed in the footsteps of Clint Dempsey and Christian Pulisic as the third American to score a hat-trick in one of Europe’s top five leagues.
Hoppe is also the first American to grab a treble in the German top-flight. He has so far scored five goals in 17 appearances as Schalke continue to struggle.
The young star signed his first professional contract with Schalke last February. The current deal will see him stay at the club until 2023.
The Germans are bottom of the Bundesliga and are 12 points off safety with nine games to go. It is fair to say it is a sinking ship that Hoppe has tethered himself to.

It remains to be seen if the reports of the gentleman’s agreement are true or if Schalke will even honour it. Hoppe has shown he has the ability to shine if given the right guidance.
Whether that continues to be at Veltins Arena remains to be seen.
