Done deal: Promising Man United wonderkid bags new long-term contract

Lyndon Tomlinson, the assistant head of academy recruitment has parted ways with Manchester United just days before the 2021/22 season kicks off.

Manchester United wonderkid Hannibal Mejbri pens new long term contract

According to the club’s official site, wonderkid Hannibal Mejbri has signed a new long-term deal with Manchester United.

The 18-year-old is one of the club’s top prospects and is held in high regard at Old Trafford. He joined United from Monaco towards the end of the summer window in 2019.

Mejbri has impressed in the youth ranks and even earned himself a call-up to the senior side earlier this season. It is debatable if he would have already made his debut had it not been for an ankle injury.

Despite being just 18, he has been a regular fixture in United’s under-23 setup. He has so far featured 18 times for the Red Devils youth side, scoring four goals and assisting seven more. (h/t Manutd.com)

Currently recovering from the aforementioned injury, Mejbri could return to action in the FA Youth Cup. The Red Devils are set to face either Sutton United or arch-rivals Liverpool in the next round.

The Red Devils have brought in a number of top young talents in recent windows. The likes of Amad Diallo and Shola Shoretire both made their debut earlier this year and it remains to be seen if Mejbri joins that list.

A tough player to pin down, Mejbri is often the victim of fouls. This prompted Under-23 boss Neil Wood to come out and urge referees to protect the prodigious young starlet earlier this season.

It is good to see the youngster commit his future to the club. Given the financial implications of the coronavirus pandemic, clubs may have to depend on young talents coming through for the immediate future.
