Manchester United identify Erling Haaland as Edinson Cavani replacement
A report by Spanish news outlet Mundo Deportivo (h/t Express) claims that Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants Erling Haaland as a replacement for Edinson Cavani.
The Red Devils signed Cavani on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain last summer. And the Uruguayan striker has done well during his time at Old Trafford, scoring 7 goals this season so far.
However, the 34-year-old’s father has cast a shadow of doubt over his future by indicating that his son wants to return to his family in South America and play for Boca Juniors.
“Edinson is going to end up playing in South America. Edinson had many conversations with Riquelme and he would like to play for Boca. He was always seduced by the idea of playing in Boca.”
A superb option up front
Haaland’s links to United are no secret at this point. However, United are not the only club interested in him, with Chelsea, Barcelona, and Real Madrid all eyeing the Norwegian striker.
Barcelona’s pursuit could be dampened by their financial struggles due to Covid-19, while Madrid’s primary focus lies on PSG forward Kylian Mbappe.
Solskjaer trained Haaland earlier in his career during his time at Molde. Probably even he could not have predicted just how good the striker would turn out to be.
And he’s just 20 years old as well. The former RB Salzburg hitman has 31 goals in all competitions this season for Dortmund, averaging a little over a goal per game. (h/t Transfermarkt)
