Transfer News: Manchester United could miss out on Raphael Varane

According to Spanish news outlet Marca (h/t Express), Manchester United could actually miss out on the signing of Raphael Varane. There has been speculation about his future but that could all be put to bed as he might just stay back at Real Madrid. Varane was out of contract in 2022 which led to rumours of an exit and a possible move to Manchester United.

The 27-year-old has formed the bedrock of Los Blancos’ defence alongside skipper Sergio Ramos for a number of years. With his contract expiring in 2022, a decision on his future has to be made sooner than later. Soon to be 28, Varane has won everything possible with Real Madrid.

The Red Devils are searching for a centre-back partner for Harry Maguire with Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof playing there currently. Varane was a player United have kept tabs on for a long time. The situation surrounding the player is akin to the events of 2019 where Varane was once again linked away from the Bernabeu.

However, Varane is actually set to start talks with Real Madrid over a new contract. Manager Zinedine Zidane is keen on keeping the player and sees him as a part of Madrid’s future. Varane might have started the season badly but he has returned to his best in recent weeks.

It does look like Manchester United will miss out on the Frenchman again. Real are adamant about keeping him and while it is still unknown if he agrees to a new deal, chances are that he could just stay back leaving United to look for another defensive target.
