Manchester United yet to make a decision on the future of Juan Mata
According to Daily Mail, Manchester United are yet to make a decision on the future of veteran midfielder Juan Mata.
The 32-year-old is not a regular in the United matchday squad this season. He has so far made just 10 appearances, eight of which have come from the start. (h/t Transfermarkt)
The Spaniard is in the final six months of his contract with the Red Devils. However, the club has the option to activate a one-year extension that would extend his stay until the summer of 2022. (h/t Manchester Evening News)
With just four appearances in the league, Mata can be seen as a star who isn’t necessarily considered first choice. While he does add strength in depth, he is a shadow of the player he once was.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is yet to comment if the Spaniard’s stay has run its course. The Norwegian, however, admitted that Mata may not be a part of his plans.
With Paul Pogba’s future also uncertain, United could be set for a revamp of their midfield this summer. The duo’s departure could also open up opportunities for Donny van de Beek.
Mata is a seasoned player who has played for some of Europe’s biggest clubs. As such, he has no shortage of suitors and was earlier linked to Valencia and Juventus.
The midfielder joined the club from Premier League rivals Chelsea in January 2014. He has since made 265 appearances for United, scoring 50 goals and assisting 47 more. (h/t Transfermarkt)
