According to reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Bayern Munich appear to have won the race to sign coveted Manchester United target Dayot Upamecano.

The 22-year-old is one of the best young defenders in world football. Already a trustworthy leader at the back for RB Leipzig, his stock has only risen in recent months.

This has led to a number of clubs keep tabs on his progress. As seen with the top stars in Germany, Bayern appear to have won the race for his signature.

Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic confirmed to German publication Bild (h/t Twitter) that the player has agreed to personal terms with the European champions.

The Frenchman’s rather reasonable €42.5million release clause gets activated next summer. Bayern have stolen a march and gone on to sign a player who can lead their defence for years to come.

The deal is expected to be signed in the coming months. Upamecano was Bayern’s top target and has been offered a five-year deal.

Romano confirmed that Upamecano is also keen to join Die Roten next summer. With them likely to lose David Alaba, bringing in Upamecano has helped plug a gap that could have proven problematic.

While the player is yet to sign the dotted line, the deal looks to be as good as done. Upamecano represents excellent value for money and United have missed out on a potential superstar.

The hunt to bring in a new centre-back goes on.
