Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes stalling on new contract
According to The Athletic (h/t Express), Bruno Fernandes is stalling on putting pen to paper on a new contract to commit his long-term future to Manchester United.
The 26-year-old penned a five-year contract at Old Trafford when he joined the club from Sporting Lisbon back in January 2020. The Red Devils have the option of extending his stay by a further 12 months as a part of the agreement.
Fernandes has exceeded all expectations in the Premier League since coming through the door as a marquee addition to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.
The Portuguese talisman was instrumental as United finished 3rd in the league last season, contributing with 8 goals and 7 assists in just 14 appearances.
The playmaker has continued to reach great heights in the ongoing campaign as well. Fernandes has bagged an eye-watering 18 goals in all competitions so far this term, to go along with 10 assists.
It was reported last week that the Red Devils have started negotiations with the Portuguese international over a new contract as a result of his sparkling form.
United are prepared to offer him a pay rise on his current £100,000-a-week wages to bring him closer to the amounts earned by elite stars like David de Gea and Paul Pogba at Old Trafford.
However, it has now been claimed that Fernandes is in no hurry to sign a new contract with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side. The midfielder is willing to wait and see how the season plays out before making a decision on his future.
The report also adds that the 26-year-old is keen to add silverware to his cabinet, something that remains a worry for Manchester United. The Red Devils have undoubtedly made great progress in their rebuilding job under Solskjaer over the past 18 months.

But they haven’t bagged trophy since the departure of Jose Mourinho while the club is yet to win the PL in the post-Ferguson era. It’s clear that the club will need to start challenging for silverware sooner rather than later if they are to convince Fernandes to stay put.
