Neville admits Cavani has proven him wrong at Manchester United
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has admitted that he has been proven wrong by veteran striker Edinson Cavani at Old Trafford.
Neville says that he was a bit sceptical when United CEO Ed Woodward sanctioned a move to sign the Uruguayan international as a free agent last summer. But the ex-England star admits that Cavani was won him over with his quality and work rate in front of goal.
Speaking to Sky Sports (h/t Express) after United’s 3-3 draw against Everton, Neville said:
“Yeah I was a little bit nervous.
“Obviously the last minute nature of his arrival, reminiscent of signings that have gone wrong over the past few years for Manchester United. But I have to say he’s been a revelation.
“His attitude, which is the only real question about him because his quality is fantastic, is spot on. His out of possession work is far better than Martial, Rashford and Greenwood.
There were plenty of doubters when United’s pursuit of a new centre-forward ended with a free transfer for Cavani this past summer. The Uruguayan had struggled for game time at PSG in the previous campaign and it looked like he was nearing the twilight of an illustrious career in Europe.
However, the 33-year-old has more than silenced his critics with some crucial strikes for the Red Devils over the past six months. He was initially utilised as an impact substitute off the bench but has gradually established himself as a regular starter up top under Solskjaer.
Cavani’s headed opener against Everton on Saturday marked his 7th goal in all competitions for United this season. With the Red Devils still very much in the title race, the veteran’s quality and experience could come in very handy heading into a crucial final quarter of the campaign.
