Jamie Carragher believes Manchester United have bottled their title challenge
Former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher expressed shock at Solskjaer’s comments about Manchester United challenging for the Premier League crown.
The Sky Sports pundit believes Liverpool are the only team who could stop Pep Guardiola’s side from lifting their third league title in four seasons.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer played down talks of his side challenging for the PL title after they conceded a last-minute equaliser to settle for a 3-3 draw against Everton at the weekend.
The Norwegian said that side shouldn’t have been considered as realistic title contenders before the start of the campaign, blaming the media for creating such a hype.
“We’re not talking about winning titles,” Solskjaer told Sky Sports. “We shouldn’t even be considered as title-chasers. That’s one for you [the media].”
And Carragher believes United have blown away a golden opportunity to end their long wait for a league title. Replying to Soslkaer’s comments, the Sky Sports pundit commented:
“I think Man Utd have bottled it now they’ve got there, they’ve almost talked themselves out of it.
“Listening to the comments of the Manchester United manager…Man Utd just seem happy to be involved – I cannot believe it. It’s a unique season; Liverpool have no centre-backs, City have had no strikers and De Bruyne has been out.
Carragher’s comments came before Man City made the trip to Liverpool for a high-intensity top-of-the-table clash on Sunday.
In truth, United have been pegged back even further in the title race after City ran riot with a 4-1 win at Anfield to establish a healthy 5-point lead atop the standings. Guardiola’s side have a game in hand to extend their advantage to eight.
The Red Devils will need to bag six points out of six in their upcoming fixtures against West Brom and Newcastle to stay relevant in the title race.
