Manchester United could yet land Dayot Upamecano despite Bayern Munich interest
According to The Daily Mail, Manchester United could yet win the race for RB Leipzig star Dayot Upamecano.
The Frenchman is one of the best young defenders in Europe. Just 22, he has established himself as the defensive lynchpin for Leipzig and has also made his bow for the French national team.
Available for a relatively cheap £38million in the summer, the Frenchman represents excellent value for money. A deal will not be easy, with the likes of Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Liverpool all keen.
The biggest threat looks set to come from European Champions Bayern Munich. Their sporting director, Hasan Salihamidzic has already made a positive impression on the player during talks.
Speaking to Sky Sports Germany (h/t Fabrizio Romano via Twitter), Salihamidzic met with the player’s representatives. The player’s agent has since revealed that the 22-year-old will choose between Bayern Munich and two as of yet unnamed English clubs this summer.
Given that this revelation came after the meeting, it would suggest than an agreement with Bayern is yet to be reached. Such a situation will give us a window to get a move in.
United have missed two golden opportunities to land Upamecano so far. Once during his time at RB Salzburg and again last summer. (h/t Metro)
Upamecano is a dominant defender who could develop into a leading centre-back. At just 22, he has close to a decade left at the top and will be a worthwhile investment.
