Bayern Munich hold positive talks with Manchester United target Dayot Upamecano
Manchester United have suffered a blow in their hopes of landing RB Leipzig star Dayot Upamecano.
Speaking to Sky Sports Germany (h/t Fabrizio Romano via Twitter), Bayern Munich director Hasan Salihamidzic has revealed that the Bavarian giants have met with the player’s representatives.
The meeting appears to have gone well as the race to land the highly-rated 22-year-old heats up. While an agreement does not appear to have been reached, the Germans look to be ramping up efforts to land Upamecano.
One of the best young defenders in Europe, Upamecano has the potential to become a colossus at the back in the coming decade.
The Frenchman has a relatively modest €42.5m release clause – a steal for a player of his potential. With him expected to move this summer, a number of Europe’s top clubs are keen.
United were close to signing the player last summer. The deal, however, failed to materialise and we went into the campaign without a new centre-back. (h/t Metro)
Bayern are keen for the Frenchman to replace the outgoing David Alaba. As the defending European champions, Bayern does have more clout than us when it comes to being a potential attraction.
United meanwhile appear to have earmarked Sevilla star Jules Kounde as their major defensive transfer target. The 22-year-old is of the same age as Upamecano and has attracted much attention at Sevilla. He will, however, cost significantly more than Upamecano. (h/t Metro)
Who we end up getting, if at all remains to be seen.

United have missed two golden opportunities to land Upamecano so far. Once during his time at RB Salzburg and again last summer. It is often believed that bad things happen in threes, hopefully we can buck the trend in the summer.
