Martin Keown compares Bruno Fernandes to Manchester United icon Eric Cantona
Writing in his column for the Daily Mail, Arsenal legend Martin Keown has compared Bruno Fernandes to Manchester United great Eric Cantona.
The Portuguese international has proven to be a stellar signing for the club. Having joined the club last January, he has emerged as our most consistent performer since then.
He was at it once again yesterday against Liverpool in the FA Cup fourth-round tie at Old Trafford. Coming off the bench, Fernandes struck an unstoppable free-kick that made the difference on the night.
The 26-year-old has had an immediate impact at United that has severely improved the club’s fortunes. It is reminiscent of another player who helped change our fortunes in the 90s – Eric Cantona.
“Fernandes is having that Cantona effect.”
The Frenchman joined United from Leeds United in 1992 and went on to spend five seasons at the Theatre of Dreams. He not only hit the ground running but also make United a fearsome opponent to face.
Keown marked the French star on his England debut in 1992 and feels Fernandes gives off similar vibes.
The Gunners legend also believes that United stars are responding well to Fernandes. The Portuguese star is a player who often makes things happen. His mentality is now rubbing off on his teammates.
“Team-mates are following his lead. Every time Fernandes gets the ball, he tries to make something happen. That’s his mentality.”
Keown believes the win against Liverpool will give United a massive boost in the title race. With confidence seeping through the squad and the supporters, there is no better time than now for us to capitalise.

Unlike Cantona, Fernandes is not one to court controversy. The former, however, helped United to four Premier League titles in his five seasons at the club. Hopefully, Fernandes will go on to achieve the same at United.
