Manchester United keen to trump Liverpool to Dayot Upamecano
According to the Metro, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has urged Manchester United to trump Liverpool to Dayot Upamecano.
The Merseysiders are going through a defensive crisis with the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez both ruled out long term. Jurgen Klopp has thus identified Upamecano as a potential signing to bolster his backline.
The Frenchman is one of the best young defenders in world football. He has, in recent times, emerged as a key player for RB Leipzig while also making his French national team bow.
United are also keen to bring in a defender to partner skipper Harry Maguire in defence. Upamecano is a player of great potential and would be an ideal candidate to pursue.
United were close to signing the player last summer. The deal, however, failed to materialize and we went into the campaign sans a new centre-back.
With Jurgen Klopp practically dismissing the chances of Liverpool signing the player this window, United have a window of opportunity they could exploit.
According to The Sun, Upamecano can be bought for £38m in the summer. Manchester United can steal a march on our rivals by tabling a bid of £55m to sign him this month, something that the club is considering.
As Virgil van Dijk and, to an extent, Harry Maguire has shown, bringing in the right defender can make the world of difference to a team’s fortunes.
In Upamecano, we will not just be getting a player who can deliver today, but also for the future. The Frenchman has the traits needed to become a defensive colossus for years to come.

Signing Upamecano would be nothing short of a statement by United. The Frenchman could go on to secure the United rearguard for years to come.
While we would have to pay significantly higher than his asking price to land him this January, it is well worth the price.
