United to make a late swoop for Alaba?

Fabrizio Romano confirms Manchester United target David Alaba will join Real Madrid in the summer

Manchester United were linked with a move for Bayern Munich star David Alaba. The Austrian is out of contract in the summer and is available for free.

However, according to reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, the player is all set to join Real Madrid in the summer.

The 28-year-old is one of the best players to potentially become available on a Bosman in recent years. A serial winner, his experience would have added much to a young United side.

Norwegian reporter Jan Aage Fjortoft had reported earlier that the Austrian star prefers a move to La Liga over the Premier League. It would now appear that he was spot on.

Romano revealed that Alaba was also keen on moving to the Santiago Berbeneu. The pre-contract agreement is almost ready after being agreed upon in early January.

Both Liverpool and PSG made efforts to land the player in December but were unsuccessful. There is no mention as to whether United too made a concrete bid for his services.

Manchester United have missed out on David Alaba

A missed opportunity!

Alaba had received approaches from five different clubs. It comes as no surprise considering his pedigree and ability.

Given our struggles in defence, Alaba would have been an excellent addition to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side. His distribution and ability to bring the ball out from the back would have brought more assurance to us keeping possession of the ball.

Losing out on Alaba is an opportunity lost. However, given his adamance of moving to Spain, it is unclear what exactly we could have done.

With him out of the picture, United can now focus on other players they are interested in.
